Calculate a BBK emergency stock

How much food and water a household can plan for an emergency stock — using the published German stock table and the advice of the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK).

This calculator is made by Smantry. It is not an official BBK tool. The quantities are an example of a basic stock. They are not advice for allergies, infants or a diet prescribed by a doctor.

Calculate quantities

The table is per person. Enter how many people you are planning for, and for how many days.

From age 13, count a person as an adult.

Not for infants. Baby food is not in the table.

How long the stock should last

Recommended quantities

1 adults, 0 children, 10 days: 20 l of water.

Water

20 l

Adults: 2 litres per day (1.5 litres of drinks plus 0.5 litres for cooking). Children up to 12: 1.5 litres per day (1 litre of drinks from the table plus 0.5 litres for cooking).

Food is scaled the same way for every person. The table does not publish a separate child ration. The example is about 2,200 kcal per person per day.

How this tool calculates

  • Food: published amount × people × (days ÷ 10).
  • 3, 14 and 30 days are the same table, scaled in a straight line. Only the 10-day stock is a BBK tier of its own; the BBK calls 3 days a useful start.
  • The table has no quantity for pets. The BBK asks households to plan for them separately.

Keep the stock in Smantry

Smantry manages the stock, watches expiry dates and shows how many days your own supply will last. In the app, the “BBK Emergency Stock” template sets minimum levels from this table.

What is the BBK emergency stock?

The German Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) recommends keeping food and drink so a household can cope for a while without a daily shop — for instance in a power cut, if the mains water fails, or if the shelves are empty.

The grams and litres in this calculator come from the nutrition-preparedness stock table: a basic food supply for one person and ten days at about 2,200 kcal per day. The BBK points to that table for worked examples. Smantry scales it to the household size and duration you enter.

Why ten days?

Ten days is the BBK recommendation: that is how long you should be able to look after yourselves if you can. The BBK also calls three days a useful start to build on. The calculator therefore opens on ten days.

Three, fourteen and thirty days are not separate BBK tiers. The calculator shortens or lengthens the same table in a straight line: amount times days divided by ten. A longer plan still has to fit shelf life, storage space and what the household actually eats. The table is an example, not a compulsory shopping list.

How much water?

Water is the most important part of the stock. The BBK uses 2 litres per person per day as a guide, of which about 1.5 litres are for drinking and 0.5 litres for cooking. The table therefore lists 20 litres of mineral water for one person and ten days.

For children up to 12 (not infants) the same table gives a drink need of about 1 litre per day. This calculator uses 1.5 litres for those children: 1 litre of drinks plus 0.5 litres for cooking. From age 65 the table recommends 2 litres of drinks per day, which is more than the standard 1.5 litres. There is no separate field for that — plan a little extra water if you need to. Pets have no quantity in the table. The BBK asks households to provide for them as well.

Tips for putting a stock together

  • Prefer food that keeps without a fridge. In a power cut, chilled and frozen food goes first.
  • Keep some food that needs little or no cooking. A short boil saves gas or fuel.
  • Run a living stock: eat what expires first and replace it on the next shop. A box nobody opens will eventually be out of date.
  • Allergies, intolerances and what the household really eats come first. The table is an average.
  • Infants need their own food. The table explicitly does not cover them.
  • Watch the expiry dates. A stock only helps while it is still safe to eat.

Keep an eye on the stock afterwards

A list on paper does not say what expires next. Smantry tracks what you have, warns about expiry dates and shows how many days your own stock will last. The “BBK Emergency Stock” template turns the groups in this table into minimum levels.

Common questions

Is this an official BBK calculator?

No. Smantry made this calculator. It is not an official tool of the German Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance. The quantities follow the published stock table and the BBK water guidance. The BBK and nutrition-preparedness pages remain the reference.

Why 2 litres of water per person per day?

The BBK uses 2 litres per person per day as a guide, of which about 0.5 litres are for cooking. The stock table lists 20 litres of mineral water for one person and ten days. For children up to 12 this tool uses 1.5 litres per day, because the table puts their drink need at about 1 litre and cooking water is added.

Do the food quantities apply to children?

The table does not publish a separate child ration. It describes one person at about 2,200 kcal per day. The calculator therefore counts each child as one person for food. It does distinguish children up to 12 for water. The table is not meant for infants.

Are pets included?

No. The stock table has no quantities for pets. The BBK asks households to plan food and water for animals separately. This calculator does not invent a number for that.

How does Smantry help after the calculation?

Smantry manages the stock, watches expiry dates and shows how many days your own supply will last — food and drinks separately. The “BBK Emergency Stock” template in the app sets minimum levels from this table.

Food quantities follow the nutrition-preparedness stock table (basic stock for one person and 10 days, about 2,200 kcal, energy values from the German food composition database BLS 3.02, in line with DGE, ÖGE and SGE). The 2 litres of water per person per day follow the BBK. Both links open on the publisher’s site.
